Keratosept is an aqueous, sterile hydrogel containing:
- Polyvinyl alcohol, having a lubricating, hydrating, viscous-elastic, mucous-adhesive, protective action;
- Dexpanthenol, being part of the class of the group B vitamins, homologous of the pantothenic acid, tissue vitamin nutrient, epithelial-protective;
- Hexamidine disethionate, polyhexanide hydrochloride and disodium edetate (antiseptic substances) and other excipients, to be used on the ocular tissues by instillation.
Thanks to the properties of its components, the medical device results effective as adjuvant of the corneal re-epithelialising process after stress caused by contact lenses, air conditioning, sun irradiation, artificial lamps or computer screen. The presence of the antiseptic in the formula, grants the sterility of the ophthalmic solution after first opening of the bottle and it results useful to protect the ocular tissues from the irritation and possible environmental sepsis caused by smog, smoke, dust, polluted air, it soothes such tissues.
In the medical device, the concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (1,25%) has been suitably studied to grant the rheologic characteristics similar to the lachrymal liquid and an effective adhesive property on the ocular mucosa with lubricating, hydrating, protective effect without causing blurred vision.
Such hydrogel ensures a prolonged effect of the components on the ocular mucosa favoring the nutrient-vitamin efficacy co-adjuvant of re-epithelialization.
Methylsulfonylmethane present among the excipients of the formula, the substance containing biologically active sulphur, does not develops any specific pharmacological action but it facilitates the absorbance of dexpanthenol, thanks to the activation of the cellular permeability.
Keratosept is a colloidal aqueous liquid characterized by the following chemical-physical properties: It is perfectly transparent and colorless; it is miscible with the lachrymal liquid in all proportions; it has the pH value, the viscosity, the osmolarity perfectly compatible with the ocular tissues and the lachrymal liquid and for this reason it has a high tolerability grade.
